To protect our ability to provide essential services, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close Heworth Leisure Centre from Saturday 31 July.

Gateshead and the surrounding areas currently have some of the highest rates of Covid-19 in the country. The resulting volume of people having to self-isolate, either because they have tested positive themselves or because they have been in contact with someone who has, has placed a huge strain on many of our services.

This temporary closure will ease some of the pressure on our critical functions and ensure our other leisure centres and swimming pools have enough staff to operate safely.

We appreciate that this is disappointing news, particularly for families who had hoped to take advantage of our free swimming offer at this site during the school holidays. However, our first priority remains the health and wellbeing of our staff and residents. Clearly, the pandemic is not yet over and we must do all we can to continue supporting our communities.

Facilities at Gateshead Leisure Centre, Gateshead International Stadium, Dunston Leisure Centre, Birtley Leisure Centre and Birtley Swimming Centre remain open.

If you have booked activities at Heworth Leisure Centre on or after 31 July, we will contact you soon to offer alternative options or a refund.

GO Gateshead members who pay by Direct Debit will have the option of freezing their payments during the closure. Please email go@gateshead.gov.uk to arrange this.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and can assure customers that this decision was not taken lightly. As always, thank you for your patience. We hope to confirm a reopening date soon.
