To help reduce staffing pressures across our leisure services, Heworth Leisure Centre will close for approximately 8 weeks from Monday 18 July.
By closing one site temporarily, we will be able to reduce the risk that our other facilities will need to close at short notice. We will also use the closure as an opportunity to carry out essential repairs and maintenance, to improve your experience of using our facilities when they reopen.
We assure you that this decision has not been taken lightly. However, the health and safety of our customers is our first priority and unfortunately, due to staff vacancies, sickness and leave entitlement, we simply do not have enough team members available to operate all of our leisure centres safely throughout the summer.
We appreciate that this is disappointing news, however, all other leisure facilities will be open as usual and we hope that those who would usually visit Heworth Leisure Centre can join us elsewhere. GO Gateshead membership includes access to gyms, pools and fitness classes across the borough. However, if visiting another centre isn't possible for you, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0191 433 3000 to discuss your options.
Swimming lessons will be moved from Heworth Leisure Centre to Gateshead Leisure Centre on Monday evenings during the temporary closure. If you have lessons booked, we will contact you soon with more information and if you're visiting Heworth for swimming lessons on Tuesday 12 July, staff will also be available there to discuss your options.
We are continuing to advertise a number of job vacancies within our leisure centres, with a wide range of roles available. If you're interested in playing a part in getting Gateshead active, please visit www.gateshead.gov.uk/jobs for more information.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to confirm a reopening date soon.
